STEP 8: Tap or click Next to print the speech recognition card for easy access to the commands Windows understands, or you can just save this link for later viewing. NOTE: Windows Speech Recognition can turn off when you say “Stop Listening” with voice activation mode, or you can choose to use a key combination + Windows key to activate and de-activate the service. STEP 6: Choose whether to allow your computer to review documents and email to better understand you when you speak. STEP 5: Read the on-screen prompt to calibrate the microphone, then tap or click Next. STEP 4: Follow the on-screen instructions for microphone placement, then tap or click Next to continue. For laptop users, or those with built-in mics, these will work just fine. NOTE: If you’re wanting the best results, a headset or other standalone microphone is a recommended choice. STEP 3: Select your microphone, then tap or click Next. STEP 2: On the Welcome screen, tap or click Next to continue. STEP 1: In the Cortana search bar, type “Windows Speech” then tap or click Windows Speech Recognition from the search results. This article will guide you how to set up Windows Speech Recognition in Windows 10, and expand the limits on what Cortana can do. Windows 10 has a built-in voice controls for some of its popular features, inlcuding Cortana, which makes quick searches for apps or answers to questions very simple. Finally, select the Start Speech Recognition option to turn the tool on, navigate to Word (or whatever program you want to use), click the microphone to turn on Listening, and then start talking.Though the voice control in Windows 10 has its flaws, it’s a handy way to conquer tasks when it’s properly working. First- timers should also select the Take Speech Tutorial option to view a short video on using the tool. Microsoft recommends you use a headset with a boom microphone for the best speech recognition results. You should also be aware that the quality of your microphone and the acoustics in your office/workspace can affect the ability for speech recognition to deliver acceptable results. Without any voice training, the speech recognition tool does not typically provide satisfactory results. Generally, I find it takes about 10 minutes of reading to a new computer (called voice training) for me to obtain fairly good speech recognition results, and 90 minutes of training to obtain very good speech recognition results. Next, select the Train your computer to better understand you option and read text to your computer so it can start to learn your voice patterns. Select the Set up microphone option and follow the instructions to ensure your microphone is set up properly. To use this tool, navigate to your Control Panel window (for example, in Windows 10, right- click the Start button and select Control Panel), and select Speech Recognition. For those who have never tried speech recognition, this tool has been included in either Office or Windows for more than 20 years.
